The futures market was pointing to a lower opening when trading resumes here today after Wall Street's big fall off the back of the rescue of investment bank, Bear Stearns.

Well, judging by the fall on Friday on Wall Street, Australia will take the brunt of today's selling as trading resumes in Asia. Australian market finished nervy and with the worst weekly loss since 1987 on Friday and after the 146 point drop in the Dow, the futures market is signalling a 90 point fall at the opening here .

Fixed mortgage rates posted a slight decrease in a wild up-and-down week, with the average conforming 30- year fixed mortgage rate now 6.32 percent. According to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large lenders, the average 30-year fixed mortgage has an average of 0.39 discount and origination points.

The big share market sell off ran out of puff in the US overnight, where it started on Friday. The Dow and other indices closed all but steady, but the US dollar was weak. The Australian dollar bounced over 94 US cents in reaction to not only the greenback's weakness, but another surge in commodity prices.

Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE) today reported a net loss of $3.1 billion, or $5.37 per diluted common share, for the year ended December 31, 2007, compared to net income of $2.3 billion, or $3.00 per diluted common share, for 2006. For the fourth quarter of 2007, the net loss was $2.5 billion, or $3.97 per diluted common share, compared to a net loss of $401 million in the fourth quarter of 2006, or $0.73 per diluted common share.
